Dubai : A group of Indian workers in Qatar will get to return home after having complained to the Indian embassy in the Gulf nation of woeful living and working conditions.
The Indian embassy decided to help 10 workers after they sought repatriation on grounds of poor working conditions at a manpower resource company they were employed in, the Gulf Times reported Thursday.
There are around 100 workers in the company, most of them from Kerala. The company, the report said, was run by three persons hailing from Malappuram district in Kerala.
On receiving the complaint, the embassy summoned a manager of the company who then eventually agreed to pay two months’ salaries and ticket fare for the 10 workers to return home.
The workers had complained that though they were brought to Qatar seven months back they had been employed only for three months and did not get their salaries.
The company also allegedly did not get their visas stamped even though they have been staying in Qatar for over seven months. The workers said their living conditions were also poor as a dozen workers were crammed into one room at a labour accommodation camp.
Following the Indian embassy’s intervention, 50 more workers are also planning to move a petition against the company’s management.
