Patna : Increasing number of crimes in the Bihar capital recently have become a cause of concern for the state government led by Nitish Kumar, who promised a crime-free state within three months when he came to power in November 2005.
“Rising crime is a matter of serious concern for the police. A special drive is being launched to check it,” said an official in the police headquarters here, requesting anonymity.
At least 14 people were killed in the last 25 days in Patna. Besides, many cases of extortion, loot, snatching and robbery have been lodged with the police.
“Criminal gangs are operating without fear and many cases are taking place in the heart of the city. Hardly a day passes without reports of loot, snatching and robbery here,” said Vishal Mahto, a software engineer.
Housewife Chanchal Singh said people feel unsafe and insecure in the city and are always worried about security.
Two people, including a Food Corporation Of India (FCI) official, were killed in two separate incidents here late Thursday night.
Vijay Kumar Choudhary, a clerk in FCI was shot dead by two motorcycle borne criminals in Kankarbagh, a residential colony, when he was returning to his residence. In the other incident, a youth was stabbed to death, the police official added.
“With the festival season around, fear of criminals runs high here,” said Amit Kumar, a businessman.
