Jammu : There was “intense and heavy” firing from the Pakistan side across the International Border (IB) on Indian positions to “facilitate infiltration of a large group of armed terrorists”, an Indian official said Saturday.
The firing on the Indian position in Pargwal area, about 30 km west of Jammu, began around midnight Friday. “Intense and heavy firing continued for over two hours. We gave a restrained response to the firing,” a Border Security Force official said.
“It was a cover fire to enable infiltration of a group of over 10 armed militants,” he said.
However, there was no tampering with the barbed wire fencing on the IB, he said. “We think at least two terrorists did manage to sneak in.” The security forces have launched a massive search to nab the infiltrators.
“This indeed is a matter of concern as Pargwal is hardly any distance from Jammu,” a senior police official said.
Similar infiltrations in May and August were followed by major attacks on civilian areas. The security forces said that militants were likely to step up infiltration in the run up to the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, due this November.
