The Ulema Council had earlier announced that it will field candidates against Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul.

“We have grudges against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and not her son Rahul,” convener of the Ulema Council Maulana Amir Rashadi told reporters in Azamgarh, 227 km from here.

Founder member of the Ulema Council, Tahir Madni said: “We may spare Rahul but not Sonia. We will definitely field our candidate from Rae Bareli against her.”

The Ulema Council has been demanding that the UPA government order a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the Batla House gun battle in New Delhi.

“Though we have been demanding the enquiry for the past several months, the government has not paid any heed,” said Rashadi.

The Ulema Council announced its two new Lok Sabha candidates from Ambedkar Nagar and Kanpur seats.

“Iftikhar Ahmad will be our candidate for the Ambedkar Nagar seat, while Ahmad Hussain will be our nominee for the Kanpur seat,” Rashadi said.

The council has now announced its candidates for seven Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.
