New Delhi : The Supreme Court Wednesday assured protection to a Jammu and Kashmir couple who are facing alleged threats from their relatives and the state’s police for their inter-faith marriage.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan assured them security after the couple approached the apex court fearing danger to their lives.
Anjum, 19, a Muslim, and Khemraj, 24, a Hindu, eloped to Delhi last month. The Jammu and Kashmir police came chasing them after Anjum’s father Mohammed Hussain complained that she had been kidnapped.
The couple sought protection from the Delhi High Court, which ordered the police here to ensure their safety.
After receiving a favourable order from the high court, the couple has now requested the apex court to quash a kidnapping case registered against the man in Jammu and Kashmir.
In their lawsuit to the apex court, they alleged threat to their lives due to which they cannot visit Jammu and Kashmir to move a quashing petition before an appropriate court there.
On an urgent mentioning by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, the Supreme Court granted protection to the couple and asked the police not to arrest them. The bench fixed April 24 to hear the matter.
Gonsalves claimed that it was unsafe for his clients to travel to Jammu and Kashmir for seeking annulment of the kidnapping case.
Though the couple had sent a quashing petition by post, the registry of Srinagar bench of the state high court returned the same.
