Kolkata : West Bengal’s ruling Left Front Thursday expressed apprehension about violence during the first-phase elections in 14 constituencies in the state April 30.
The state’s northern part, which has witnessed several agitations demanding separate states, and the wewstern districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia – where Moaists have some presence – go to the polls in the first round.
“Today we have seen Maoist violence in some parts of the country that went to polls. We have seen that even landmines were used for creating tension during the poll process,” state LF chairman Biman Bose told a press conference here.
He said: “It’s very much clear that these separatist forces can again try to create problem in our state, as they are making efforts to divide West Bengal into different parts.
“The separatist forces will try to create trouble for the voters,” he said.
Eight Lok Sabha seats in northern West Bengal districts and six in the western parts of the state, will go to polls April 30, with at least 134 candidates in the fray.
“The administration should look into the issue so that free and peaceful election can take place in the state,” Bose said, adding that people should also be careful while exercising their franchise.
