Hisar (Haryana) : It’s ‘better late than never’ for the Haryana police. The state police have cracked a case of dacoity 15 years after it was committed in this Haryana town with the arrest of two men.
Gold and silver jewellery worth Rs.1.6 million (Rs.16 lakh) were robbed from a jewellery shop in Moti Bazaar area of this town in January 1994, a police spokesman said here Friday.
However, the accused, despite being identified by the police at that time, were able to dodge the law. They were declared proclaimed offenders by a local court in August 2004.
Hisar city police station chief Jagbir Singh said two men, Madan Lal and Jagdish, have been arrested for the jewellery shop dacoity but their other accomplices were still at large.
Police officials said that the two men, against whom criminal cases had been registered in Delhi for various crimes, were arrested following a tip-off by an informer.
Singh said that a number of jewellery pieces stolen in 1994 were recovered following raids in Delhi following a tip-off at that time. However, the accused were able to dodge the police then.
Hisar is some 300 km from Chandigarh.
