New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday dismissed bail plea of former Uttar Pradesh minister Amarmani Tripathi, serving life term in a Dehradun jail along with his wife Madhumani for getting eliminated his poetess girlfriend Madhumati Shukla through contract killers.
A bench of Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice J.M. Panchal dismissed Tripathi’s bail plea, while asking the Uttarkhand High Court to expeditiously hear and dispose of his appeal against conviction.
Tripathi was convicted and sentenced to life term in jail in October 2007 along with his wife, cousin Rohit Chaturvedi and contract killer Santosh Rai for plotting the murder and eliminating Shukla in 2003.
Tripathi had got her eliminated after she started pestering him for marriage after becoming pregnant with his baby.
The trial of the case had been shifted out from Lucknow on the order of the apex court after the victim’s family expressed apprehension of fair trial, alleging that the accused was threatening them and also the witnesses in the case.
Appearing on behalf of Tripathi, senior counsel U.U. Lalit pleaded to the court that his client was behind bars for the last four and half years, even before he was convicted in the case.
He pleaded to the court to grant him bail pending disposal of his appeal against his conviction by the high court.
The apex court, however, dismissed the bail plea and asked the high court to dispose of his appeal as early as possible.
