Dhaka : Lawyers of Bangladesh’s opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Thursday gave a five-day notice to the government asking it to withdraw the house eviction notice while her party announced a month-long agitation.
As confrontation is building up, a minister threatened that any agitation on the issue will not be tolerated, Star Online said.
A legal notice was served on behalf of Zia, who is also two-term prime minister (1991-96 and 2001-06) and heads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The government of her political rival, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was asked to withdraw its notice asking Zia to vacate her Dhaka Cantonment house where she has lived since 1981.
A notice by Mahbub Uddin Khokon, a lawmaker and counsel for Zia, said that if the government did not withdraw the notice, legal action would be taken against the government.
The lease of Zia’s house was duly registered on July 13, 1981, it said.
Khokon told media that a writ petition will be filed with the Dhaka High Court, challenging the legality of the government notice if the government doesn’t withdraw the eviction order.
Moudud Ahmed, another legal advisor to Zia, had earlier asked the government to get a court clearance for the eviction notice served earlier this month.
The BNP Thursday said its units would agitate at the district and sub-district levels to highlight the wrongdoing of the government which wants to evict Zia.
Students and youth wings of the BNP have already begun protest rallies since the government cancelled the house’s lease April 4.
State Minister for Home Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj said “no movement will be tolerated” over the issue and that the government will resolve the issue as per the rules and regulations.
