Chennai : Police in Tamil Nadu Monday said no violence had taken place in the state during Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s fast in support of a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
“The state is absolutely peaceful and everything is under control. In some places traffic had to be diverted due to fasts by leaders of the ruling party on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue after the chief minister undertook a hunger strike in the morning,” Tamil Nadu Director General of Police K.P. Jain told IANS.
Leaders of the opposition AIADMK, however, accused the ruling DMK of triggering violence in several parts of the state over the crisis in Sri Lanka.
“To our knowledge dozens of government vehicles have been stoned in at least seven cities in Tamil Nadu,” an AIADMK source said.
Karunanidhi, who began a fast at the Marina Beach here, called it off after Colombo said it was ending “combat operations” against the Tamil Tigers.
