BJP trying to politicise Bofors in vain: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Congress party Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to politicise the Bofors gun payoff case once again after Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi’s name was dropped from the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) list of wanted people.

“The BJP has lost it. They have fired this bullet many times and overused it. They say anything when it comes to elections and electoral games,” Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said.

He was referring to the criticism from the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani who earlier in the day said the CBI’s decision to drop Quattrocchi’s name from its list of wanted persons reveals that the Congress was not confident of coming back to power.

Sharma also slammed the BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley for his remarks on the issue.

“Jaitley as solicitor general (in the government headed by V.P. Singh) travelled through Europe in search of evidence, stayed in luxurious hotels, spent millions of dollars, but could not produce even a shred of evidence. Also, being a law minister (in the government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee) he could not produce even a dead rat. What a shame!” Sharma said.

Quattrocchi, known to be close to late Rajiv Gandhi, who was prime minister in 1987 when the bribery scandal broke, is a prime suspect in the case but has managed to evade interrogation.
