Adv M Jayashanker, noted media critic and lawyer, inaugurated the march of the Solidarity. He opined that beauty contests came to our country as part of the catastrophes of globalisation. They have no other aim than the marketing goal of attracting women to cosmetic items. Those who believe in values cannot accept this, he added.

That a woman’s body should be kept for the enjoyment of men emerges out of a feudal thought, said SM Sainudheen, Solidarity district president, in his key-note address. It is a sign of cultural downfall that the state, which had buried feudalism decades ago, is now keeping the nakedness of women for competition, he added.

MM Muhammed Ummer, district president, presided over the meeting. Suhail Hashim, general secretary, and MB Faisal, secretary, too spoke.

In a separate demonstration, hundreds of girls took part in the protest march organised by the GIO. KK Raheena, GIO state president, inaugurated the public meeting when the police stopped the march.

Beauty contests, which challenge the moral values and sense of pride of the society, insult the Indian culture that views womanhood as sacred, said Ms Raheena.

Shabeena Sharqi, state official, and OM Thazlim, district president, also spoke.
