New Delhi : The Lok Sabha was adjourned Friday after members of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created an uproar over corruption cases against union minister Virbhadra Singh and the son of former home minister Buta Singh.
Raising the issue during zero hour, BJP’s Rakesh Singh expressed concern over “corruption in high places” and cited the cases against Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh and Sarabjot Singh, the son of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Commission chairman Buta Singh.
Several party members were already on their feet over the issue and the BJP’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, demanded they be allowed to raise it during zero hour since a notice for a special discussion on this had been turned down by the speaker.
They kicked up a ruckus when Speaker Meira Kumar did not budge and all BJP MPs stood up. Kumar was forced to adjourn the house for nearly one and a half hours.
The Himachal Pradesh police have filed corruption cases against Virbhadra Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh. The complaint against him is for alleged misuse of official position and criminal misconduct when he was chief minister in 1989.
Buta Singh’s son Sarabjot alias Sweety Singh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation July 30 for allegedly accepting a bribe to help withdraw a case against a Nashik contractor under the law on prevention of atrocities on Scheduled Castes.
