53-year-old woman becomes second swine flu fatality

Mumbai: A 53-year-old woman died here Saturday evening of swine flu, becoming the second fatality in India of the fast-spreading virus, officials said.

Additional Chief Secretary Health Sharvari Gokhale told IANS that the woman had been treated at the Lilavati Hospital for the past four days for “pneumonia and hypertension”.

“Today she was admitted to Kasturba Hospital and her blood test was taken. It tested positive for swine flu and she passed away this evening,” she said.

She has been identified as Fahima Panwala and belonged to Mumbai.

This is India’s second swine flu death after 14-year-old Reeda Shaikh succumbed to the disease in Pune on Monday.
