Vadodara : A 48-year-old man died of Influenza A(H1N1) in this Gujarat city Sunday, becoming the sixth victim of swine flu in the state, officials said.
Hasmukh Hingu, a resident of Bharuch town in southern Gujarat, was admitted to the government-run SSG Hospital here Thursday with a ‘respiratory distress syndrome’ and had been put on the ventilator, a senior resident of the hospital said. He died Sunday morning.
Hingu tested positive for swine flu Saturday, the official said.
Gujarat has so far reported 82 confirmed swine flu cases, and 512 suspected cases are awaiting their blood sample reports.
Eight new H1N1 cases were recorded in the state in the past one week – four from Vadodara, two from Ahmedabad and one each from Surat and Rajkot – official sources here said.
The Gujarat government has, meanwhile, called for stricter monitoring of the health of school and college students after two students of the premier Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) tested positive for swine flu Saturday.
The two, who have been put under isolation for treatment, are believed to have contracted the infection from a girl student of the institute who ran away to New Delhi after she tested positive for the H1N1 virus last week.
