Sensex closes 388 higher on global cues

Mumbai : Indian equities markets surged Monday on strong global trends, with a key index ending trade 388 percent higher than its previous close.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 15,362.93 points, ended at 15,628.75 points, up 387.92 points or 2.55 percent.

The broader-based Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also closed in the positive terrain at 4,642.8 points, up 2.52 percent.

Broader market indices similarly ended in the green, with the BSE midcap index closing 2.61 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index ending 2.83 percent up.

The market breadth was positive, with 2,044 stocks advancing, 715 declining and 67 remaining unchanged.

Of the 30 stocks on the Sensex, Tata Motors, Jaiprakash Associates, ITC Ltd, Larsen and Toubro, and Hindalco were among the top gainers.

In other Asian markets, a key index at the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed 0.02 percent higher.

The Nikkei, a key index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, rose 342.85 points, or 3.35 percent, to close at 10,581.05 points.

The Hang Seng, a primary index of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, too ended on the winning side, gaining 336.92 points or 1.67 percent at 20,535.94 points.

In Britain, the FTSE 100 index was ruling 0.66 percent higher at 4,883.03 points. Its French peer, the CAC 40, was up 0.73 percent at 3,642.37 points.

Germany’s DAX was also ruling positive at 5,498.59 points, having risen 0.66 percent.
