Rajshahi, Bangladesh : The ongoing disaster management activities have contributed a lot to enhance mass- awareness that helps reducing casualties caused by the natural disaster.
This was revealed at the inaugural session of a two- day follow-up training workshop on overall disaster management at the circuit house conference hall here yesterday.
Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) under its Comprehensive Disaster Management Program (CDMP) organized by training for the district disaster management members.
Director (Training and Planning) of DMB AHM Abdullah addressed the opening session as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Shefaul Karim in the chair.
CDMP Training and Monitoring Specialist Wahidur Rahman and Assistant Director of DMB Nitai Chandra Dey Sarker also addressed the session, among others.
The speakers stated that above three lakh people died in the cyclone and the subsequent devastating flood in 1970.
In the 1991’s massive cyclone, they added that more than 1.20 lakh people died while in the 2004’s cyclone, more than 34 percent people of the country’s total population were marooned by floodwater but the death figure was 747.
In this regard, they termed the enhanced mass awareness as the vital indicator to reduce the casualties.
The speakers also mentioned that nine ministries have so far been incorporated in the second phase to expedite the disaster management activities more.
Apart from this, they revealed that another five-year program will be conducted from 2010 to intensify the future works.
