The two officers were at a home on Flora Avenue and Andrews Street Sunday afternoon when they heard a woman screaming for help from the washroom. They rushed in to see what was happening, Winnipeg Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen told the Vancouverite News Service.

They found a woman had just given birth to the baby while she was seated on the toilet.

“The officer were following up on an investigation so basically they were looking to talk to someone at that address and while they were invited into the house they heard some commotion and screaming,” Michalyshen was quoted as saying.

“They went into the washroom and they located an adult female – 32-years-old – who had just delivered a baby.

“The baby had actually fallen into the toilet, the baby was retrieved from the toilet – the baby wasn’t submerged in the water but it was in the water,” he said of the remarkable coincidence of the presence of the officers at the scene when the baby was born.

“The officers immediately administered CPR, and they did so for about five minutes prior to ambulance attending and so that means mouth-to-mouth as well as percussion were administered by the officers,” he said.

The baby was rushed to hospital where the child was initially listed in critical condition but later upgraded to stable.

The two officers have been congratulated by the Winnipeg police chief. “They will receive a commendation and we’re all very pleased with the way they handled it,” he said.

The two officers were not named since they work on street crimes and often have to carry out undercover work.

Winnipeg police said the baby was born in the toilet accidentally and the mother had no criminal intent. “There is no indication this was done purposely or that there was any criminal intent at all, this was purely circumstance.”
