Copenhagen : With last-minute negotiations on to rescue the Copenhagen climate summit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday pushed for “a balanced and equitable outcome” and asked the world not to abandon the Kyoto Protocol.
“We will all play a positive and constructive role so that we can bridge the differences to achieve a balanced and equitable outcome,” Manmohan Singh told world leaders on the last day of the global climate summit here.
“India will not be found wanting,” Manmohan Singh stressed.
Outlining voluntary actions taken by India to combat climate change, Manmohan Singh said New Delhi has already announced a voluntary target of reducing carbon intensity of its GDP growth by 2020 (in comparison to 2005 levels) and stressed that it “will deliver on this goal regardless of the outcome of the Copenhagen conference”.
Stressing on “equitable burden-sharing,” Manmohan Singh asked the world not to abandon the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) that are underpinned by the core principle of common but differential responsibilities of developed and developing countries for mitigating carbon emissions.
