Rushmi, Ranjeet highest ranked at National Grass Court tennis

Kolkata: Tamil Nadu’s Ranjeet Virali Murugesan and Rushmi Chakravarthi are the highest ranked players to have sent in their entries in the men’s and women’s sections of the Rs.4.5 lakh Vishwarupa Tubes National Grass Court Tennis Championships to be held at the Calcutta South Club from Dec 21.

While Ranjeet is India’s No.6, Chakravarthi is a rank ahead on the distaff side.

Among other men’s entrants are N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth, Narayanswamy Sriram Balaji of Vinod Sridhar of Tamil Nadu and Delhi’s Yannick Nelord, the organisers said at a media meet Friday.

Delhi’s Sweta Kumari Solanki, Shivika Burman from the host state and Karnataka’s Sheethal Goutham are among the prominent women contestants in the tourney, which is slated to end Dec 26.

The winner in the men’s section will be richer by Rs.35,100.00, while the runners-up gets Rs.24,300. The women’s fight will see the champion pocketing Rs.23,400 and the losing finalist Rs.16,200. Cash awards will also be given in men’s and women’s doubles.

The singles will be a draw of 32. There will be 20 direct entries, four wild cards and eight qualifiers.

The men’s wild cards have been given to Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur and Sudanwa Sitaram of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh’s Kaza Vinayak Sharma and local boy Manoj Kumar Sewa.

The women wild carders are Poojashree Venkatesh of Karnataka, Maharashtra’s Tanvi R. Shah, Ankita Raina of Gujarat and local girl Amrita Mukherjee.

The qualifying round matches will be played Dec 19 and 20.
