Even as membership has been opened in only 26 of the state’s 80 parliamentary constituencies, as many as 650,000 aspirants have already submitted their application forms, he added.

“The membership norms are extremely strict, which is why nearly 50 percent of the application forms have been rejected,” Youth Congress member Arvind Chaudhary told media persons here, adding most of the rejections were on account of applicants not submitting proof of identity.

As a part of ensuring a fool-proof system, a bar code is being affixed on every application form.

“We are so particular that no sooner had 25,000 bar code stickers gone missing from a courier packet, we immediately cancelled all those bar codes so that there is no scope for any kind of irregularity,” Chaudhary pointed out.

The membership drive marks the beginning of the organisational election process in the Youth Congress under the eye of former chief election commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh.

Initiated by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, an organisational election in the Youth Congress in the state is being witnessed after a gap of more than two decades.
