Youth held for kidnapping mentally challenged man for ransom

New Delhi: A 21-year-old man has been arrested for kidnapping a mentally challenged person of similar age for ransom of Rs 15 lakhs (Rs 1.5 million). The victim has been rescued and is unharmed, police said Monday.

Rahul Kumar Singh, a resident of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh was arrested Sunday for kidnapping Pradeep Panwar in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas area Dec 10. The victim was rescued from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

“Singh, during his interrogation disclosed that he was in dire need of money for his sister’s marriage. He hatched a plan with his accomplices Abhijeet, Bhupender and Raghuvender two months ago to abduct Panwar. Singh knew that the victim’s father, Jagdish, has a sound financial background and was due to receive Rs. 2 million in a court case,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

Police said Singh had studied up to Class 12. He worked as a supervisor with a Larsen and Turbo Metro Project at Green Park for an year. Dhaliwal said a search was underway for Singh’s accomplices.
