Ban’s visit comes amid escalating violence and conflicts in Afghanistan while the capital Kabul has seen three suicide attacks since the beginning of 2009.

Ban was expected to meet the commanders of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

UN agencies, according to media reports, were seeking $603.9 million for Afghanistan to meet the immediate needs of those made most vulnerable by natural disasters, lack of access to basic social services, increasing food insecurity caused by rising prices, and the worsening security situation.
