Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir’s twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar were cut off Friday after a portion of a highway caved in following heavy rains in the area, police said.
Over 200 metres of the highway connecting the twin districts to other parts of the state caved in near Assar, about 150 km northeast of here. The highway runs along the banks of a lake of the Baglihar hydro-electric project, which is about 30 km downstream across the Chenab river.
Six parked vehicles were washed away when the highway caved in.
The area is known to be prone to landslides and a geological expert said on condition of anonymity: “The dam has further loosened the earth that has caused the road to cave in.”
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which looks after the road’s maintenance, has begun repair work on the damaged stretch.
