The country’s Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed that the minister will begin a two-day visit to the United States on Sunday and will then arrive in Russia on Wednesday.

During the visit he is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, John Kerry. The talks are likely to focus on the U.S. missile defense shield in Czech Republic and Poland, and Russia’s stance on the issue.

According to unofficial sources, the visit could include a formal request from Washington for the European Union to accept some detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison, which President Barack Obama has ordered to close.

The Czech Republic holds the EU’s six-month rotating presidency.
