Regional organisations the Arab League intends to cooperate with are the African Union, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

The move was to allow Sudanese diplomatic talks on Darfur, currently held in Qatar, sufficient time to carry out the Abuja Agreement that would create a peaceful solution to humanitarian and security-related issues in Darfur, the Arab League’s Deputy Secretary- General Ahmed bin Helli told KUNA from New York Tuesday.

An Arab League delegation along with an African Union counterpart are currently holding talks with geopolitical groups from the UN regarding the issue.

Bin Helli said that the delegation presented a report on the results so far of the current Qatari hosted talks between the Sudanese government and the country’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

The initiative seeks to achieve a framework agreement that would put a stop to armed clashes in Darfur, paving the way for a package solution raised at the Arab Foreign Minister’s meeting of June 19, 2008 which calls for a solution to Sudan’s crisis, the ICC decision and executing Al-Bashir’s peace initiative.

Bin Helli also called on the ICC Prosecutor’s Office to extend its decision regarding the chiefs of armed Sudanese factions in Darfur who have also received arrest warrants.
