The Army spokesman major general Udaya Nanayakkara told media in Colombo that the alleged attack of the separatists Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was targeted on a refugee camp in Visuamadu locality captured by the army.

Nanayakkara specified that 20 soldiers and 8 civilians died, among them three women, and 40 others were wounded, many of them women and children.

The people injured were evacuated to nearby hospitals to receive medical attention while the Army continues its offensive move the Tamil tigers away from their last enclave in Mullaitivu forest.

According to the Army the area controlled by the LTTE has been reduced to 57 square miles on the northeastern Sri Lanka coast.

Meanwhile international humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross calculated that about 200,000 civilians are still trapped, of which 17,000 have managed to escape to the area under Sri Lanka troops’ control a few days ago.

Over 95,000 people have died during Sri Lanka conflict that has lasted for over 25 years.
