Chandigarh : A father, seeking action against doctors allegedly responsible for his son’s death 18 years ago, Sunday said he had no regrets at hurling a file at Chief Justice of India (CJI) K.G. Balakrishnan during a function here a day earlier.
Chandigarh-based businessman Balbir Singh Makol hurled the file, pertaining to his son’ case, in the direction of Balakrishnan during a function at the Punjab and Haryana High Court premises after he was not allowed to meet the chief justice.
Makol was immediately taken into custody by Chandigarh police officials but was released later at the Sector-3 police station. No case was registered against him.
“I am running from pillar to post for the last 17 years but the court gave clean chit to the doctors whose negligence cost the life of my 18-year-old son in 1991. I went to meet the CJI yesterday (Saturday) but the officials present there did not allow me to go near him,” Makol told IANS.
“It was just out of frustration that I did that and I am not at all repentant of my act. I have lost faith in the judiciary and hope that this action might open the eyes of sleeping courts,” said Makol.
Police officials said Makol’s action reminded them of the shoe-hurling by an Iraqi journalist at then US President George W. Bush during a press conference in Baghdad recently.
Makol’s son was admitted in Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here after some knee infection. As there was no significant improvement in his son’s health, Makol took him to a leading private hospital in New Delhi where his son died under mysterious circumstances.
“I filed a case against the hospital in 1992 but the court gave a clean chit to the accused doctors. I also filed a case for compensation at the consumer court, but that case was also closed after the death of one doctor. I have spent my entire life’s earnings on these cases,” stated Makol.
Har Sahai Sharma, a police official, said: “The police immediately took the accused (Makol) into custody but released him after writing a Daily Dairy Report (DDR). We have given him a warning to keep his emotions under control and not to repeat the similar thing in future.”
The chief justice of India came to Chandigarh to attend a function at the Punjab and Haryana High Court Saturday. He left for Shimla Sunday.
