“Sorcar was a legendary magician and I had been thinking for long if something can be done to pay a tribute to him. I spoke to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee sometime back and requested him if a postal stamp on the magician can be released,” Lok Sabha member Sujan Chakraborty told reporters here Tuesday.

“Chatterjee promised to help and due to his initiative the central government has agreed to release Sorcar’s postal stamp within 2009,” he said.

Sorcar’s younger son P.C. Sorcar (Junior), who is a noted magician himself, said he is very excited.

“I still can’t believe this news and I am too excited. This is the first time that a postal stamp on a magician is being released. I am proud as a son, magician and as his admirer,” he said.

He said this will give recognition to magicians who would be considered artistes.

“Even today, people don’t believe that magic is an art. It is not an easy one to perform. But this decision of the Centre proved that the misconception is slowly getting clarified. I feel proud to have followed my father’s ‘magic’ footsteps and grateful to the Centre for this honour,” Sorcar (Junior) said.
