Lucknow : Nearly 800 activists of a regional party, demanding special reservation for the most backward classes, clashed with the police here Wednesday and pelted stones at vehicles, a police official said here.
The activists of the Janwadi Party were demanding special reservation quota for the most backward classes and constitution of a commission for such communities.
Some of the protesters also attacked the police with sharp-edged weapons in which two policemen were seriously injured, the police said.
“In all, 15 policemen were injured when the protesters attacked them. The injured are now out of danger,” Deputy Inspector General (Lucknow) N.K. Srivastava told IANS over phone.
“We have arrested 17 protesters and will detain more party activists for assaulting the police and targeting buses and other public vehicles. During the protests, the agitators also damaged several police jeeps,” Srivastava said.
The incident took place in Hazratganj area here.
“In order to prevent the protesters from being more unruly, we used force to disperse the mob,” said Srivastava.
No protester was seriously injured in the baton charge by the police, claimed Srivastava.
