New Delhi : A day after Pakistan accepted the nationality of the lone Mumbai attacker in Indian custody, US Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asia Richard Boucher stepped up pressure on Islamabad, saying that the US was determined to find out the truth behind the Mumbai carnage.
“The US is determined to find out who carried out the Mumbai attacks,” Boucher, who arrived here from a visit to Islamabad, told reporters after meeting Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon.
“People responsible have to be brought to justice,” he said in a pointed message to Islamabad.
Boucher also stressed that although Pakistan has taken some action by banning terror outfits, it was “not enough”.
“Pakistan has been doing quite a bit, banning terrorist organisations, but that’s not enough,” he said.
Reinforcing the point he made in Islamabad early this week that both countries have “some pieces of the puzzle” to the Mumbai 26/11 attack, Boucher underlined the need for India and Pakistan to cooperate in the Mumbai probe.
Menon shared more details of the dossier New Delhi presented to Islamabad that sought to establish Pakistani link with the Mumbai tragedy and urged Washington to further intensify pressure on Islamabad to act against the terror infrastructure, official sources said.
Menon had shared the dossier with US ambassador David Mulford Monday.
Boucher arrived here Thursday afternoon in an attempt to defuse tensions in the region, which could affect the US’ planned surge against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
His visit comes amid reports about the US sending teams of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to Islamabad to question suspects held by Pakistani authorities in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.
“They (FBI) have visas and they are going to go, they are finishing some things here,” Mulford told NDTV news channel in an interview here.
