RAMALLAH, Jan 15 (KUNA) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said here on Thursday that the death toll due to the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip and the increasing number of deaths is “unbearable”.
Ban Ki-moon expressed, during a press conference with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Al-Quds, his indignation over the bombing of the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza by Israel.
He explained that he had requested clarification from the Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on this issue, adding that Israel replied by saying that the bombing was by mistake and Israel regrets it.
Ban pointed out that he was very concerned for the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip where many of them were killed while many people are still dying.
He stressed the need to stop the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, adding that he had had the impression that he can progress towards a settlement and this should be achieved as soon as possible for the sake of civilians.
