New Delhi : Stung by the Nov 26 terror attack in Mumbai that left around 170 people dead, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday called for a new global partnership to “dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism”.
“We need new partnerships at the global level to counter the threat of terrorism,” Mukherjee told the “Partnership Summit 2009” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here.
“India has faced the threat of terrorism for a long time. We need international partnerships by way of sharing analyses and intelligence. All countries must have access to high technology to counter terrorism.”
The minister’s comment came against the backdrop of New Delhi pressuring Islamabad to make public its investigations into the links between Pakistani nationals and the Mumbai attacks, as also India’s own effort at preventing such horrific acts in future.
“We are strengthening our anti-terror mechanism and will look at various counter-terror measures. We are left with no choice but to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism,” Mukherjee added.
The minister also maintained that time had come for India to have a larger role in global strategic affairs, especially within the United Nation system.
“The talks of expansion of the UN Security Council is going on for quite some time. Time has arrived to come to a decision on this,” Mukherjee said, referring to the widespread support New Delhi has from a host of countries for a seat on the council.
