Raju assumes charge as first NIA chief

New Delhi : Radha Vinod Raju Monday took over as the first chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) set up to probe terror-related crimes in the country.

Since NIA was created recently in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, there is no separate office or space earmarked for the probe agency. Raju took reins at the home ministry in North Block.

Raju, 59, also met Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta.

According to reliable sources in the home ministry, Raju, an officer of the 1975 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), handed Chidambaram a list of officers who could be part of the core NIA team.

NIA may take a week to start functioning.
