New Delhi: According to a recent released report, school enrolment for Muslims has shown some improvement but much work still remains to be done.
Data from the district level survey received from 1.25 million schools suggest that 74% of Muslim children are enrolled in elementary schools, 78% in primary education level and 64% of the children in the upper primary level compared to their population proportion of 13%.
This is a slight improvement from last year’s figure when 70% Muslims were found to be enrolled in primary schools and 56% in upper primary level. Percentage of Muslim enrolment in primary classes increased to 10.49 in 2007-08 from 9.39 in 2006-07. Corresponding figures in upper primary enrolment is 8.54 and 7.52 per cent
Data for 2007-08 gathered from 624 districts was released yesterday by National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA). The survey report is titled Elementary Education in India: Progress towards Universal Elementary Education, DISE, Flash Statistics: 2007-08. District Information System for Education (DISE) is one of the major activities of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme initiated by the Government of India. District elementary education plans across the country are primarily based on the DISE data.
Out of 35 States & Union Territories for which data is gathered, more than 20 show slight improvement from last year’s data of Muslim enrollment. Proportion of Muslim students in elementary schools for six states exceeds the proportion of Muslims in those states and UT areas. These are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Lakshwadeep, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.
