Banur (Punjab) : For 18 years he served the Punjab police – on a fake identity, officials said. A complaint was lodged Sunday against the constable, who is absconding.
According to the police, Dalbir Singh, a school dropout, had joined the Punjab police by showing the educational certificates of his brother Kulveer Singh.
Dalbir Singh was on the rolls in the name of Kulveer Singh and he even managed to get a ration card in his brother’s name.
Dalbir Singh belongs to Khaspur village in Patiala district, some 25 km from state capital, Chandigarh.
The matter came to light Sunday evening when Nirmail Singh, block committee member of the same village, filed a complaint against him with sufficient proof at the Banur police station here.
“Dalbir Singh joined the Punjab police in January 1991. He was earlier posted at Patiala and these days he was posted here as a constable. We got this complaint Sunday,” Ajit Singh, investigating officer of the case said.
“We went to his home to arrest him but he was not there. We have registered a case of cheating against him and are raiding his possible hideouts to catch him at the earliest,” Ajit Singh said.
