Kochi: PTA Raheem, MLA, has been elected new chairman of the Kerala Haj Committee. The election was held at the chamber of Mr. Paloli Muhammed Kutty, minister in charge of Haj Affairs, who presided over the meeting. It was the first meeting of the newly-constituted Haj Committee which came into force on 20th June.
Thodiyoor Muhammed Kunhi Moulvi suggested the name of PTA Raheem to the post, which was backed by Ahmed Devarkovil and KP Kunhammed Kutty Master. Mr. Raheem, who was not present in the meeting since he was on Umra pilgrimage, was elected unanimously.
Mr. Raheem is the MLA from Koduvally in Kozhikode district. He fought and won in the Assembly elections as an independent candidate with the support of the Left Democratic Front against the Muslim League, of which he had been a member earlier. He is a lawyer by profession.
Prof. AK Abdul Hameed, former chairman of the Haj Committee, was selected as the state’s representative to the national Haj Committee of India, which will be reconstituted in September.
In the absence of the CEO of the Committee, the election was supervised by Mr. E Surendran, Additional District Magistrate of Malappuram District.
