A group of militants entered the house of contractor Mohammad Sharief Naik in village Dhara Chaka, about 180 km northeast of Jammu, late Thursday.

Security forces cordoned off the house and asked the militants to surrender.

Brigadier General Staff of 16 Corps Brig Gurdeep Singh told IANS: “The widow of a terrorist was also inside. So we sent her mother to the house to ask her to surrender but the daughter refused.”

The militants and security forces were locked in a gun battle Friday morning.

“We even used rocket launchers as the militants were firing heavily and throwing grenades,” said Doda district Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Singh.

“Two militants were killed in the battle. Their associate Shakeela was seriously injured and has been hospitalised,” he added.

Prabhat Singh said Shakeela was married to a militant Haq Nawaz, who was killed a few years ago. “This lady was used as a helper,” Prabhat Singh said.

Gurdeep Singh said search was on to find if any more militants were hiding in the area.
