Agartala/Imphal: Tripura police Saturday arrested seven militants, including a woman, of an outlawed Manipuri separatist group, officials here said.
“The seven guerrillas of People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) including their self-styled army chief Mohammad Abdur Rahaman, 25, were detained from a motor stand in Agartala with some Bangladeshi mobile SIM cards and incriminating documents,” said Director General of Police Pranay Sahaya.
“The rebels unsuccessfully tried to cross the border through Sonamura in western Tripura and then they returned to go to Bangladesh through another route,” he said.
The rebels told the police that they have links with Bangladesh-based separatist outfits.
In another incident, unidentified men opened fire at the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) in Imphal West district of Manipur.
“The firing at the eastern portion of the hospital-cum-medical college late Friday night caused no casualty,” said a police spokesman. The intention behind the incident was not yet known.
Meanwhile, a suspected Islamist militant from Bangladesh was apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) troopers along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.
A BSF official told IANS by phone from Shillong: “Ropchen Ali Fula, 27, was detained at Sahapara in West Garo Hills district late Friday. He is suspected to be involved in anti-national activities and has been handed over to the police.”
