New Delhi : Citing rising incidents of violence against them in the capital, lawyers in all five district courts of Delhi observed a day-long strike to demand beefing up of security in court premises.
Mahesh Chand Sharma, member of the coordination committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi, said: “Court premises are visited by all sorts of people including criminals. For the last few days, incidents of violence against lawyers have increased owing to absence of proper security arrangements.”
Following the strike, most lawyers abstained from appearing in courts and the matters listed were adjourned. In a few cases, however, some advocates were seen appearing in court to argue bail matters.
A meeting of the bar associations of Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini and Dwarka was held Wednesday in which it was decided that the lawyers would observe a day-long strike.
Earlier this week, an advocate practicing in Karkardooma court was abducted from outside the court complex and later set free as the abductors realised he was not their target.
Lawyers are now demanding setting up of permanent police posts at all five district courts premises, besides frisking of visitors.
