Kolkata: Railway passengers should be more vigilant about their own security while commuting, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee said Sunday night.
“People, mainly the railway commuters, should be more vigilant about the security matter. I have asked the railway officials to enhance the safety and security in the railways,” Banerjee said in an interview to the private Bengali television channel Star Ananda.
“Security is a state subject. The General Railway Police (GRP) is in charge as far as the railway security issues are concerned. The state government pays 50 percent and the centre pays the rest of the amount of salary to GRP personnel.
“It’s the state’s responsibility to provide security to the passengers who commute by trains,” she added.
Pointing out that developing railway infrastructure would be one of her focus areas, Banerjee said her ministry would look into various matters pertaining to passenger amenities.
“There are a few complaints about the quality and quantity of food available in the Rajdhani Express. I’ve already discussed it with my officers and hopefully this problem will be resolved shortly.
“I believe in working with a human face and I’ll deliver as much as possible for West Bengal as well as for the rest of India,” said the Trinamool Congress leader.
Banerjee also promised to speed up several delayed projects, which were sanctioned during her previous stint as railways minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
