Chandigarh : In a pursuit to bring out an artist hidden in every individual, the administration of the union territory of Chandigarh organised a unique sculpture making workshop for citizens of the city and neighbouring towns.
Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10 organised a six-day long Regional Sculpture Camp June 12-17 that started Friday.
NPS Randhawa, director of the museum, told IANS: “The idea is to make optimum use of the summer vacations and to attract maximum people towards this form of art. There is no age limit and this camp is free of cost for everyone.”
The camp was organised by young sculptors of the region, many of whom are still studying in the government art colleges under the supervision of experts from this field.
“This camp is a part of our outreach activity programme and is unique in itself as apart from students and sculptors, people from all walks of life like doctors, teachers, students, bankers and engineers are also participating in it,” he added.
Randhawa pointed out that the response is also whopping and they had started getting inquiries ten days before the start of this camp.
Charanjit Matharu, an internationally acclaimed sculptor, who inaugurated the camp, told IANS, “The administration has provided a very encouraging platform for the budding sculptors of this region through this camp. This initiative would certainly spread awareness about this gradually dying art in this part of the country.”
“We focus on wood and metal carvings in this camp. I would oversee this camp for the next seven days and seeing the heavy rush I believe that we have to extend this camp for another one week,” stated Matharu.
Anmol Sharma, an engineer and one of the participants, said: “It is a very thrilling experience to learn this art in a very interactive and playful manner. Generally we have very few good sculptor teachers but here so many experts are gathered under the same roof.”
