Bangalore: India may get back to the two-party system after the next general elections if the new government deliveres on its commitments, Azim Premji, chairman of India’s leading IT firm Wipro, said Friday.
“If the UPA (Congress-led United Progressive Alliance) government delivers on all its 100-day commitments, which is possible, you can see a completely different election results five years hence (going) back to the two-party system of government,” Premji said at an innovation summit here.
Terming parliamentary democracy an advantage for the socio-economic development of India, he said results of the recent elections gave first signs that the Indian voter favours a two-party system.
“The outcome of the recent elections indicates that the Indian voter is willing to come around to go back to the two-party system of parliamentary democracy. If the new government honours all its 100-day commitments, you can see completely different election results five years hence to return to two-party system,” Premji told about 500 delegates at the fifth India Innovation Summit 2009, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here.
Lauding Indian democracy for functioning over the last six decades, Premji said the political parties have shown sagacity in managing coalition governments and learning the hard way to handle alliances.
“The result of the Lok Sabha polls shows that parliamentary democracy functions. We also had a reasonable success in managing coalition governments. We can criticise them for not moving in the direction initially spelt out because of confusion within the coalition government. They deliver though not to our expectations. It is a huge culture, which has built up on the country,” Premji added.
