New Delhi : The Congress party Monday suggested Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati spend public money more on people’s welfare than for putting up memorials and statues, including of herself.
“Mayawati has been lavishly spending public money on building memorials and statues. I would like to suggest her that she should spend more of public money on people’s welfare,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad said in response to the Supreme Court Monday asking the Uttar Pradesh government to explain use of public funds for installing statues of the chief minister and others.
The court’s order came in response to a public interest petition filed by advocate Ravi Kant, who sought a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) probe against Mayawati for misusing billions of rupees of public money for installing statues of herself and other Dalit leaders like Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the party’s poll symbol, elephant.
Ahmad, however, said that the Congress was not against putting up statues and memorials of people who have done service to the nation and humanity but there was a limit to using public money for such things.
