Bangladesh government competent to handle situation: Pranab

Kolkata : Terming the mutiny by border guards in Bangladesh as an internal matter of the neighbouring country, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Sunday said the Sheikh Hasina government was competent enough to handle it.

“It’s an internal matter of Bangladesh. They have a democratically constituted government. They are competent to handle the situation,” Mukherjee told newspersons when asked whether there was any Pakistani hand behind the mutiny of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) that has left scores of army officers dead.

“I don’t want to make any comment on the internal matters of a sovereign country. I wish all success to the elected government of Bangladesh,” he said on the sidelines of a seminar here.

Gunfights broke out inside the BDR headquarters in Dhaka Wednesday morning as the paramilitary troopers mutinied to protest poor wages and frequent transfers.

The government held talks with a delegation of the mutineers Thursday and an agreement was reached but by that time, the mutiny spread to other BDR camps located all over the country.

The revolt ended in the face of an imminent attack by the Bangladesh Army which moved tanks into position outside the BDR headquarters. The mutineers then laid down their arms.
