New Delhi: Divisive forces are getting emboldened in BJP-ruled Karnataka as their diktats are seldom confronted by the government and law enforcing agencies. After Mangalore pub attack, now they have forcibly stopped Muslim students from wearing naqab in a college premises in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

Muslim girls of the Government Composite Pre-University College in Panja village of Sullia taluka of the district have been banned from wearing the naqab by local Hindutva outfits and the BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), says The Hindu.

In January this year ABVP activists reportedly met the college authorities and demanded ban on wearing naqab in classrooms. Sensing trouble in rejecting their demand, the authorities agreed. But soon the demand of the Hindutva extremists grew as they forced for expansion of the ban in the entire college premises. As soon as the college gave in the extremists came out and began implementing the ban. They would sit at the college gate and when a Muslim student in naqab would enter the college, they would scold her.

After that they demanded the college authorities to ban Muslim students from wearing naqab on their way to and from the college. The college did not give in to the demand as the college committee was divided on it. When the extremists knew about it, they barged into the college office and beat up those opposing the demand. While some of them were arrested, the ban is still enforced.
