Ahmedabad : Security is being beefed up at the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) in central Gujarat to thwart any terror attack on one of the largest dams in India.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), the agency executing the dam project, will later this month install seven high-mast lighting systems at strategic points surrounding the dam at Kevadiya Colony, about 200 km from here, because of the threat perception following the Nov 26 Mumbai terror assault.
The lighting system, which will cost Rs.3.2 million, will also help tourists who visit the site in large numbers, a senior SSNNL official told IANS from Vadodara over telephpone.
The official said the dam site was already under heavy round-the-clock security cover with armed Gujarat police personnel positioned at 47 points.
“After the serial blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26 last year, it was decided to protect all vital installations in the state,” the official added.
The SSP, one of the 30-odd major dams planned on the Narmada river, is nearing completion.
