Kolkata : Two postgraduate Iranian students of Visva Bharati university in West Bengal were injured, one of them critically, when gunmen shot at them early Friday, police said.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Laxmi Narayan Meena told reporters that one of the students, Ilyad, suffered a bullet injury in the chest. The other victim, Yusuf, was hit on the left hand.
Both students have been admitted to the Durgapur Mission hospital. Doctors said Ilyad’s condition was critical.
The incident occurred when two men forced their way into a private mess where the Iranians stayed and demanded money from them. Ilyad resisted and was wounded when one of the attackers fired, Meena said.
Hearing the shot, some locals rushed in and overpowered one of the gunmen. In a bid to free his accomplice and escape, the other person also opened fire, injuring Yusuf. Both attackers have been arrested.
