Kolkata : A city court Friday remanded a suspected Pakistani militant, arrested here as he was buying a ticket to Jammu, to 14-day police custody, the police said.
Acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF) of the city police arrested Shahbaz Ismail from a railway booking counter at Fairlie Place Thursday.
“Ismail was produced at the Bankshall court Friday. The court remanded him to 14-day police custody,” Rajeev Kumar, special additional commissioner of STF, said.
Kumar said Ismail confessed he worked for Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Al-Badr.
“During interrogation, Ismail has confessed he was a member of Al-Badr. He used to work as a constable with the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers till 2008.
“He was an old friend of Yusuf Baluch, a senior member of Al-Badr. Ismail ran away from the rangers in 2008 after he decided to become a jehadi. He joined Al-Badr with Yusuf’s recommendation,” Kumar said.
Kumar further said Ismail had left his Pakistani passport at Dhaka and entered West Bengal through the Malda border a few days back. He came to Kolkata Thursday morning from Murshidabad district.
“We are still interrogating him for more details and also trying to track down the person who helped him to cross the Malda border without proper papers,” Kumar said.
