Brussels : Bangladesh and Pakistan will each receive 50 million euro from the European Union over three years (2009-2011) in food aid and for agriculture projects.
This sum is part of the 1 billion euro “Food Facility” programmme approved by the European Union last year in December to improve food security in 50 developing countries in response to the growing food problems faced by many developing countries.
As the first financing decision in the framework of the 1 billion euro prgoramme, the European Commission , the EU’s executive body, adopted here Monday a 314 million euro package of projects to improve the food security situation in 23 developing countries across the globe.
Afghanistan will receive 24.2 mn euro, Myanmar, 24.4 mn euro, Nepal 23.3 mn euro, Sri Lanka 5.2 mn euro in total over three years from the programmme.
Louis Michel, EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, said the “Food Facility” is the development response – €1 billion over 3 years to get agriculture back on its feet.
“The package adopted today targets the 23 countries worst hit. This is a response to the food crisis which is already hitting developing countries,” he added.
